BACK IN 2016.
INVOKE started out in 2016 as a not-for-profit organisation working to promote and harness grassroots volunteerism for social, economic and political empowerment.
INVOKE draws the distinction for its work on data analytics to profile voters in Malaysia’s 14th General Election. Using big data analytics and machine learning algorithms, INVOKE was able to predict voter’s political inclination and deliver matching campaign messages to groups of persuadable voters.
INVOKE was the only organisation that predicted the outcome of the election correctly against a widespread belief that the incumbent administration would be re-elected.
INVOKE also successfully combined data analytics with social media messaging to reach millions of voters. Its social media assets are one of the most viral mediums among Malaysian, serving news and updates on a variety of subjects.
Since then, INVOKE has transitioned commercially as a full-fledged data firm offering solutions to a wide range of clients. Its strength is derived from its ground-breaking work on data and the breadth of skills of its 80+ workforce from various backgrounds.
INVOKE continues to run grassroots driven programs and social advocacy that benefit the public, alongside its commercial projects and services.
Between November 2016 to May 2018, INVOKE recruited close to 42,000 volunteers to help its campaign to support pro-reform candidates standing in Malaysia’s 14th General Election.
INVOKE was also instrumental in mobilising tens of thousands of Polling & Counting Agents (PACAs) around the country to monitor the election process. The presence of more polling agents was a factor in reducing incidents of reported electoral fraud in the election.
Our messaging worked because we relied extensively on data analytics to deliver campaign messages that eventually struck a resonance with the public.
The Power of Data
INVOKE carried out more than 50 different surveys (over the phone) involving at least 400,000 Malaysians over a period of 12 months to establish a set of initial data points; with which various analyses were carried out.
On top of that, INVOKE gathered more data through the social media, petitions and online communication involving hundreds of thousands of voters, to further enrich the data points.
Most importantly, our volunteers made weekly calls to identify swing voters to gauge their voting preference. Swing voters’ responses were fed to our central database on a weekly basis to fine tune the profiling of voters.
All this allowed INVOKE to profile voters’ political preference more accurately and identify issues and messages that were most effective to persuade them.
Our track record speaks for itself.
INVOKE is the largest election campaign volunteers group that has ever existed in Malaysia and South East Asia. Our 42,000 volunteers played crucial roles in heightening public’s awareness of their democratic right to demand better accountability from the government.
INVOKE achieved one of the highest campaign message penetration ever reported in any major election campaigns in the world.
INVOKE served 1 billion of social media’s campaign impressions to a voting population of 15 million throughout the eighteen-month campaigning period. This translated to an average of 67 times of campaign messages delivered directly and individually to each voter over the social media.
This achievement in micro-targeting beats the much-discussed Cambridge Analytica’s campaign performance during the US Presidential Election of 2016.
Credited for winning the White House for President Trump, Cambridge Analytica claimed it served 1.4 billion campaign impressions over the social media (to a voting population of 250 million) that contributed to the vote swing in the marginal states and eventually delivered the presidency to Trump. This translated to an average of 6 times of campaign messages delivered directly and individually to each voter over the social media.
With accurate voters profiling derived from data analytics, INVOKE’s messaging efficiency was 10 times better than what Cambridge Analytica delivered for President Trump.
Beyond the general election, INVOKE holds steadfastly to its founding ideal of empowering individual members of society to make a difference. Other than political empowerment, INVOKE currently focuses on a few crowd-sourced projects for economic and social empowerment.
